CRUNCHTIME MAY 2009 NEWS
Pete’s Update
It has been a frantic start to 2009 and we’re very excited about the changes at Crunchtime. If you’ve visited the studio this year you will have experienced some of these changes first-hand, but for those who haven’t caught up with the news, here’s my summary of the highlights:
Saying Goodbye to Old Friends and Hello to New Staff
In February, Alison Potts moved on to Swisse Vitamins. We wish her the very best in her new role as regulatory manager.
More recently, Dustin Brown – our resident model, wrestler, and surfer – also moved on, to pursue his passion for martial arts on a permanent basis. Dustin will be instructing and competing in Jiu-Jitsu full-time. We hope he wins many domestic and international championships and receives all the accolades his hard work deserves.
Filling the void left by these departures are the powerful Renee Purbrick and beautiful Josh Hromis (or maybe I have it the wrong way around). Both Renee and Josh come from the Naval and Military Gym ( Coates Lane), which closed in March.
Renee, Crunchtime’s new Studio Manager, has hit the ground running and both staff and clients alike have already benefited from her enthusiasm, professionalism and wealth of fitness experience.
And for those clients who miss having Dustin’s good looks around, say hello to Josh! But if you think he’s just a pretty face, you’d better think again. His comprehensive knowledge of the industry and experience as a trainer are a huge asset to Crunchtime. In his capacity as a personal trainer he compliments the broad knowledge and experience of our team.
You can get to know Renee & Josh better by reading their profiles on the website or meeting them in the studio.
Baby Bosko – Crunchtime’s youngest member It’s been over seven months since the arrival of Bosko ‘The Boss’ Misic. It therefore seems like the perfect time to give you an update on his progress.
Those clients who’ve seen the little guy when he joins his dad at Crunchtime on Monday and Tuesday afternoons have commented on how much he’s grown and how developed his vocal cords are (I think he gets that from his mum!). To give you some idea of just how fast he is growing, at just over seven months old he is already half his mother’s height. You might think that’s pretty amazing but, to put it in perspective, mum is only 150cm (4 foot 11) tall! Jokes aside, Bosko is doing really well. He weighs a healthy 8.5 kilograms and has recently started to crawl and eat solids. He has an insatiable appetite for mum’s milk, pureed fruit and vegetables and it seems everything he touches goes straight into his mouth (that, I think, he gets from me!).
While the first few months required an enormous amount of patience (for both Bosko and his parents) and an equally monumental adjustment to my lifestyle, I think I’m finally getting the hang of it and must admit I’m even enjoying it. Well, maybe not the lack of sleep! If you see the little guy around the studio, he wants you to know he doesn’t mind the odd cuddle!
FILEX ‘09
FILEX is the biggest convention in Australia for fitness professionals, with lectures covering a huge range of topics. Personally I like to think of it as Australia’s largest gathering of spandex, leotards and magic pants (pants that make you look slim)! Seriously though, it’s a great opportunity to catch up on all the latest developments in the industry and see the mountains of research undertaken by academia to support many of the things we already know, and dispel some of the myths we believed to be true.
This year FILEX was held over three days at Darling Harbour in Sydney and, apart from the numerous seminars, the industry showcased new fitness products, cutting edge supplements and, for the fashion-conscious, all the latest gear.
I continue to be astounded by the growth and development of the industry in terms of the number of participants, innovation in equipment function and design and the amount of resources directed towards research.
Claire Coate and Tom Eckersley joined me at this year’s convention and we endeavoured to cover as many different lecture subjects as possible. While most seminars were informative, I found the sessions on metabolic syndrome, the importance of nutritional timing and human circadian cycles particularly interesting and I intend to add some information on these topics to our website in the near future.
At Crunchtime we continue to believe that conferences like FILEX benefit us as trainers by broadening our knowledge, professionalism and service and you as clients through programs designed using industry best practices underpinned by empirical studies. As always, our commitment to professional development at Crunchtime is all about helping YOU achieve your goals.
All the best,
Pete Misic
Sometimes, it's more fun with a friend!
Crunchtime has always offered the option of training with a friend or a small group of colleagues (2 to 4 people). Not only can you share the fun and the hard work, you can also share the cost!
If you know a friend or two who might like to join you for a group training session, you should take advantage of our new referral reward program. Not only are we offering introductory packs of 3 group training sessions for the price of two but existing clients who refer their friends will also receive a complimentary 30 minute one-on-one training session. Contact Renee to arrange some group fitness fun and claim your reward.

Crunchtime’s Website becoming more interactive If you have visited our website recently, you’ll be aware that it has been updated to include views, news, tips and articles from the Crunchtime team about current health and fitness issues relevant to you. The website also provides updated information about our services and our staff as well as home workout tips and tools for you to manage your fitness outside of the studio.
To further improve the service offered to Crunchtime clients, we are creating a new page called The Crunchtime Noticeboard. This will be updated monthly with healthy recipes, exercise routines, recommended reading material and other fitness and health-related news.
So remember to check out the website regularly to take advantage of the updates and, if you’d like us to address a specific topic on the site, don’t hesitate to let Renee know.
